Wall, 19, could pair up with Gilbert Arenas — who is coming off a 50-game National Basketball Association suspension and a felony gun conviction — in the backcourt of a team that went 26-56 last year.

The 6-foot-4 Wall is the first Kentucky player taken with the top pick in the NBA draft. He averaged 16.6 points and 6.5 assists per game as a freshman this past season.

“It’s a big honor,” Wall said in a televised interview after his selection, referring to being the first No. 1 pick from the Wildcats.

Kobe Bryant scored 23 points despite 6-of-24 shooting and the Lakers won their 16th NBA championship Thursday night, dramatically rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA finals.

Bryant earned his fifth title with the Lakers, who repeated as NBA champions for the first time since winning three straight from 2000-02.

Ron Artest added 20 points for the Lakers, who shot terribly while trailing for most of the first 3 1/2 quarters. Yet they reclaimed the lead midway through the fourth quarter and hung on with big shots from Pau Gasol and Artest.

“Well, first all I want to thank everybody in my hood,” Artest said in an ABC interview right after the game. “I definitely want to thank my doctors … my psychiatrist, she really helped me relax a lot.”

The Celtics were denied the chance to claim the title. The finals are now tied at three games apiece. Someone will celebrate a championship here Thursday night.

Bryant carried his team’s determined spirit but this time did not have to carry them with his scoring. He led the way with 26 points and 11 rebounds but got plenty of support from Gasol (17 points), Ron Artest (15 points), a resurgent bench and persistent team defense.

Gasol, whose toughness was again called into question during two losses in Boston, rebounded splendidly. He finished just shy of a triple-double, collecting 13 rebounds and 9 assists.

Bryant was serenaded with chants of “MVP” chants all night and left to a standing ovation with 3 minutes 21 seconds left.

An equally confident Dan Edmonds walked down Causeway Street and, amid fans chanting “Beat L.A., Beat L.A.,” guaranteed victory.

“We’ll kill ’em in Game 6,” said Edmonds, 45, of Mansfield.

The Celtics stumbled at home in Game 3, but their fans had no doubts about the outcome last night.

“I knew we was going to win,” said Jason Hollis, 34, of Mattapan, who watched the game at nearby Hurricane O’Reilly’s. “We’re taking it all the way.”

His wife, Stephany, 36, knew her team would come up big. “When it’s time to show up, we show up,” she said. “Beat L.A. That’s it.”

From chron.com

The Celtics don’t care how hideous Thursday’s game appeared to basketball purists. They know it knotted the series at two games apiece and assured them they won’t face elimination on their home floor in Sunday’s Game 5.

Boston’s backup big man, Glen Davis, wrote a new chapter in the book of Celtics playoff lore with a fourth quarter outburst that turned the game. Scoring seven points in an 11-2 run in the first 3:38 of the period, Davis’ energy and interior aggression gave Boston the impetus it needed to change the game and knot the series.

Davis had 18 points and five rebounds in a remarkably efficient 21 minutes.

The Celtics also got a fourth-quarter boost from backup point guard Nate Robinson. The smallest player on either roster, the 5-9 Robinson scored six in the period, playing so well that Celtics coach Doc Rivers left Rajon Rondo, perhaps his best player through the entire playoff run, on the bench most of the final quarter.

Fisher finished with 16 points, and Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum had 10 rebounds apiece for Los Angeles.

Kevin Garnett, who had just six points in Boston’s victory Sunday, had 25 in Game 3. But Ray Allen, who had 32 points in Game 2, missed all 13 field goal attempts — one shy of the NBA finals futility record — many of them while Fisher was guarding him.

“We just had to be poised and understand they’re going to make a run, and we did that,” Bryant said. “They made a push but they never fully got control of the game. We made big shots when we needed it.”

It was exciting, you could say, for me to go against him, Tim Duncan, Dirk [Nowitzki] and a couple of the other guys.

“So it was fun — I think it was fun. We both competed. I was trying to make myself known, I guess you could say, and trying to be successful here because for me it was an adventure.

The Lakers eventually overcame their embarrassing six-game ouster to the Celtics two years ago and are now seeking their second consecutive title, while the Celtics have returned to NBA Finals after having an opportunity to defend their title usurped by a Kevin Garnett knee injury. But these teams have hardly picked up where they left off in Boston, where Bryant wept as the Celtics splashed Coach Doc Rivers with Gatorade and Garnett kissed the parquet floor and shouted, “Anything is possible!”

Thanks to the sprightly play of young Mr. Rondo, a lot of people have upgraded the Celtics to a Big Four. But don’t you get the feeling that Mr. Rondo is still sitting at the kids’ table during team meals, eating pizza bagels and carrot sticks? Or that after big victories, Mr. Pierce, Mr. Garnett and Ray Allen tell him that the after-party is at the “hot new club at 47 Lansdowne Street,” only to have Mr. Rondo get there and discover it’s a parking garage?

If the Celtics take the series, we want to see Mr. Pierce hand Mr. Rondo the MVP trophy. And then tell him the wrong time for the flight home.

From The Providence Journal

“I told him almost every practice during the playoffs, at every single practice, I made a point of going over to him [to tell him to] stay engaged,” Rivers said. “ ‘At some point you’re going to win a game for us. I can’t tell you when. I can’t tell you when you’re going to play. I can’t tell you if you’re going to play, on what night at least, but at some point you’re going to win a game for us.’ ”

That night was Friday night in Game Six. Robinson scored 11 points during a 14-2 Celtics surge. He capped off the stretch with a 3-pointer that gave the Celtics their biggest lead of the first half, 48-27.

“The game could have gone either way at that point,” Boston captain Paul Pierce said. “Because at that point we were only up about six or eight, Rondo gets hurt, and he comes in as a huge sparkplug and really pushed this game up for us.”

If the Celtics drop game 6 at home and are forced to return to Orlando for game 7, they’ll be given the chance of a thumb stuck in an angry bee hive. Does New England — which endured the now-defunct Red Sox curse — still believe in omens? The Magic have been dressing in the same locker room the Flyers used when they broke the Bruins.

More to the point, do the Celtics believe any of the bad vibes swirling? Certainly not. But a strange twist it is, when an NBA team has to studiously ignore a result from the NHL.

“I would doubt that players get affected by what happened in another sport,” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said in a Thursday press conference. “I don’t think most of our guys on any of our teams follow hockey very much.”

The Los Angeles Lakers are not demonstrably smaller than they were a week ago. It just seems that way.

The zippy, zone-happy, 3-point-loving Phoenix Suns have overcome size and experience deficits to tie the Western Conference finals at 2-2. The Lakers claim not to be stunned or concerned. But a pair of road defeats left them a bit diminished in stature — figuratively, if not literally.

The Suns no longer seem intimidated by the Lakers’ lanky 7-footers, Gasol and Andrew Bynum, or bothered by Odom’s length, or in awe of the Lakers’ championships.

“I didn’t understand it [at the time], I’m sorry, I’m not that good [at paying attention to cheers during the game] to understand it,” Jackson said. “But after the game I was disappointed when I heard it was [going on].”

Prokhorov, the oligarch with interests in banking, precious metals, real estate, and media, is worth an estimated $13.4 billion, making him the second richest NBA owner behind Portland’s Paul Allen.

He will have numerous decisions to make right away, because the team will have arguably the busiest summer in its history following a 12-70 season under outgoing owner Bruce Ratner.

Prokhorov is expected to give team president Rod Thorn a contract extension sometime next week, and that will be followed by the NBA Draft Lottery in Secaucus — where Prokhorov himself will probably represent the team Tuesday night — and a free agent market in which the Nets hope to have at least $26 million to spend on new players.

Rondo is averaging 21.8 points, 13 assists and 8.3 rebounds. One obvious option is the switch to James, who has shut down Paul Pierce so far and said Sunday that he would be willing to check Rondo.

Brown said he was worried that if James was taken off Pierce, Pierce could find his touch after averaging 11.8 points and shooting only 32 percent from the field in the series.

“You put LeBron on Rondo when he’s doing a nice job of making Paul work and you have to put a smaller guy on Paul, and we all know what Paul is capable of doing,” Brown said. “You do that for long stretches, and it can open up a can of worms, and it puts some pressure on LeBron to work defensively throughout the entire game. We’ll pick and choose our spots when to put LeBron on him.”

From 48 Minutes Of Hell

Ginobili scored 27 points against the Suns on Friday night, starting alongside Parker. Manu shot 10-17 from the field and 4-9 from the 3-point line. Entering Game 3, Ginobili was shooting to the tune of 27-77 from the field, a slump-worthy 35%, since breaking his nose in the Spurs’ first round series against the Dallas Mavericks.

Ginobili claimed that the bandages on his broken nose didn’t affect his shot, but the numbers begged to differ. However, with his shooting performance on Friday night, perhaps he was being truthful. Maybe it was simply a change of starting position that he needed.

When Ginobili started next to Hill in the backcourt, it was Manu who did more of the facilitating on the offensive end. Hill spent more time off the ball and spotting up on the perimeter, while Ginobili ran the pick-and-roll offense.

From NBA Fanhouse

Living now in Fort Lauderdale, Pippen, 44, sounded puzzled by his lack of opportunities today within the NBA. He wants to coach in the league, putting to use everything he learned during a 17-year career when he redefined the small forward position.

He was rebuffed by the Bulls two years ago before they hired Vinny Del Negro, and his phone doesn’t ring very often, surprising for the greatness he once brought to the game.

He was a seven-time All-Star, a Defensive Player of the Year, and usually the set-up man that allowed Jordan to shine like he did.

He spoke to FanHouse Friday at ESPN The Weekend, being held at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Tim Povtak: Why aren’t you coaching today in the NBA?
Scottie Pippen: Jobs in the NBA are difficult to get. I would like to be there one day, but it’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Right now, I’ve been focusing on my family. I want my kids growing up in the right environment. That’s where I’ve been the last few years. I expect to get back to the NBA soon.

The Los Angeles Lakers may have won game 1 of their NBA Western Conference semifinal playoff series, but some folks still think that Phil Jackson is a descendant of Frankenstein (katchop)

From Bleacher Report

The Lakers $12 million dollar head coach made a serious miscalculation.  After the starters had ended both the second and third quarters with an eight-point margin, he put in the reserves to begin the fourth quarter.

Then Phil Jackson sat back calmly and watched his reserves go on an 0-for-9 binge as the Jazz not only cut the Lakers lead but took over the game.  It was under seven minutes when he finally put Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher back in the game.

Here they had built a lead.  Now Jackson was asking them to go in the game cold and build another lead against a team that was suddenly hot.

So much for the vacation, the siesta, or the intermission as one writer had put it.

The Lakers not only had to work to try to win a game that they already had won.  But Bryant, Gasol and Lamar Odom had to work doubly hard to get back adrenalin and their swagger back and overcome a four-point deficit.

Tuesday night was the Lakers best game of the year. Easily. They executed their offense, but more importantly they held the explosive Thunder in check on defense.

The Lakers got back in transition and shut off the lane — the Thunder’s parade of layups stopped. It all started with Kobe Bryant matched up on Russell Westbrook — with their lead speedster slowed, the Thunder offense ground to a halt.

But can the Lakers do it again? On the road in loud Oklahoma City?

From USA Today

Brown, in his 13th pro or college coaching job, insisted after Orlando’s 99-90 victory Monday that clinched a 4-0 first-round victory that he won’t coach for anyone other than Jordan. But the 69-year-old Brown also said he’ll talk with his wife and children, who live in Philadelphia, before announcing if he’ll return for the final two years of his contract.

What makes the plot more intriguing is the 76ers have a vacant coaching job, and perhaps a front-office opening soon, too. Brown’s longest stint as a coach was a six-year stay in Philly when Ratliff played there.

“That’s hypothetical,” Brown said when asked if he’d leave Charlotte for a job as a general manager or team president. “I’m really, personally, not ready to step down in terms of my desire to keep coaching.”

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is finding out that lately, his game face is not scaring anyone (katchop)

And this is no April Fools. I am witness, these Lakers have fallen and I’m wondering if they can get up in time to defend themselves and their title?

I saw nothing to inspire me last night.

“They just outplayed us,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said, “regardless of inspiration.”

Most startling was that the Lakers actually tried to turn on the gas against a game Hawks team and couldn’t do it. Kobe Bryant was in full Black Mamba mode and it didn’t seem to matter.

“What we did just didn’t work,” said Lakers forward Ron Artest, who took a shot to the chest from Hawks sub Mo Evans (18 huge points) and didn’t respond in kind, a move symbolic of the Lakers’ entire evening . “We tried to win but we just couldn’t.”

It was an alarming performance for a team that doesn’t seem to have the same win-a-title-or-else edge to it that it did a year ago.

And about the only thing uglier than the Bulls‘ performance on a national stage was the sombrero and pancho TNT broadcaster Charles Barkley briefly wore courtside.

“Los Bulls are muy terrible,” Kenny Smith cracked during the TNT broadcast.

You don’t need a translator to understand the Heat’s 103-74 blowout victory makes the Bulls’ playoff aspirations muy difficult.

NJ Nets Avoid Record

The New Jersey Nets eliminated any chance of finishing with the worst record in NBA history, beating the Detroit Pistons 115-107 on Friday night.

Brook Lopez had a career-high 37 points and Yi Jianlian had a career-best 31 to lead the Nets to their ninth win. For the first time this season, the Nets have won two consecutive games.

Even if New Jersey (9-63) loses its final 10 games, it can do no worse than tie the league mark for the worst record (9-72), set by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1972-73. Hey, and that’s not the worst.

Amar’e Stoudemire ‘Elevates And Detonates’

Let’s clear the air on this. I concur with Aldridge: “Holy s—.” Plenty comes into play with this dunk to get this reaction from the masses, and not only because of the devastating finish and the PHX pop at the end. No, much of the awe comes from the notion everyone except for poor Anthony Tolliver knows it’s coming. This was no sucker punch. This was a telegraphed roundhouse that connects flush on the jaw and knocks everyone dead.

NBA Goes Latin

The NBA has been celebrating it’s Noche Latina event this month.

The NBA has one of the largest and fastest-growing Hispanic fan bases in U.S. professional sports, and we want to continue building their interest in the game through participation, programming and events,” said Saskia Sorrosa, Sr. Director of Marketing for the NBA. “This initiative celebrates the NBA’s unique and dynamic fan base with a focus on our Spanish-speaking communities.”

Noche Latina, first launched during the 2006-07 season, will feature celebratory uniforms developed in conjunction with La Agencia de Orci & Asociados, a U.S. Hispanic agency, to display the team name as spoken by the Latino population. Rather than translating the team names literally, market research concluded that Spanish-speakers in the U.S. refer to them differently. The Miami Heat, for example, is called “El Heat”; the San Antonio Spurs are “Los Spurs.” Noche Latina uniforms were carefully selected based on the uniforms that had the most affinity within the Hispanic population.

Courting LeBron James

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers swept through New York and New Jersey earlier this week, leaving a wake of speculation behind him.

For those keeping score, the jersey change means James is staying in Cleveland; the Jay-Z concert means he is coming to New York; and the commentary by the disgruntled Nets guard means nothing discernible, but may mean that James will not sign with the Nets.

Amid all of this winking, nodding and subtle plotting, James found time to rout the Knicks and Nets, presumably his two greatest suitors in July.

Boston Celtics Shocked By Nets

On the same day the Celtics hung a sign in their locker room aimed at inspiring the team to get its act together, Boston stumbled through an inexcusable 104-96 loss to the lowly Nets at the TD Garden.

The sign in the locker room reads, “Individuals win games, but teams win titles.” It was born after the team watched the HBO documentary “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals” instead of practicing Friday.

Maybe they should have practiced. Boston showed up for the first three minutes, built a double-digit lead over the five-win (now six-win) Nets, then promptly disappeared.

I’m sad to see Eddie go,’’ Allen said. “He was a brother of ours. We won a championship together, so we’ll be forever connected. My heart goes out to him because I know he really wanted to be here and help us do what we were trying to set out and do, win a championship this year.’’

The atmosphere in the locker room once the trade deadline passes isn’t terribly different from any other day. But the relief is there.

“As a player, you feel a little more comfortable knowing you’re here for the rest of the season,’’ said Davis. “You’re not getting traded to another team, you’ve just got to keep playing, staying focused on what we have to do, staying focused on the main goal.’’

Said Allen, “We were saying how it’s a lot of guys in grocery carts this past month, because a couple of us have been shopped left and right.’’

Brown made his third start and had his first career double-double, scoring eight points in the final 1:13 while Bryant sat out his fourth straight game because of a sprained left ankle.

The defending NBA champions have won all four games they’ve played without Bryant, who also was unable to play in the All-Star game.

Four different players have led the Lakers in scoring during his absence, including Ron Artest, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, who had 18 rebounds and eight points against the Warriors.

Brandon Jennings this afternoon said he was just joking around on twitter about being bipolar, “Didn’t have to write an article about it.” Welcome to the world of celebrity, Mr. Jennings. Look, we’ve all made the “I’m bipolar” joke with friends and loved ones when we’re in a mood, but if you do it on twitter, it comes off differently. No harm done, but you have to be a little careful about what you put out there.

After bringing several Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders on the court with him, Robinson’s final dunk came when he threw the ball off the backboard, grabbed it and turned midair for a two-handed backward slam.

“The best thing I brought with me, the Dallas cheerleaders of course,” Robinson said. “I asked if they could help me out with the dunk. They did their job and I did mine.”

While not using the cheerleaders as props—“They’re way too beautiful for that,” he said—Robinson celebrated his final dunk by grabbing a pair of silver and blue pompoms from one of them and waving them in the air.

Has LeBron James Decided?

February 07, 2010 By: Katchop Category: NBA

Is it possible that LeBron James is considering leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers after this season.. for the New Jersey Nets? It seems far fetched, but some think James might be sending signals that the Nets could be his choice.

The Cleveland Cavaliers may lose LeBron James in the off-season, with impending New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov expected to attempt to lure James with a max contract and millions more in European endorsement deals (katchop)

James is a noted “fan” and close personal friend of UK freshman John Wall, the near-unanimous first overall pick projection. Wall is considered a franchise-type player and whoever lands that player will have a fantastic point guard that they can build around. But the James-Wall connection leads itself to a pretty interesting notion if you step back and see the big picture.

The New Jersey Nets are a near-mathematical lock for the No. 1 spot in the lottery. That only leaves them with a 25 percent chance of landing Wall, but that’s still a better chance than any other team in the league will have. So let’s say the Nets do in fact land Wall, which makes Devin Harris superfluous. The Nets will then have one of the best players to come out of college in the last five years (some consider him the best), oodles and oodles of cap space, a starting-caliber point guard to trade, and cap room beyond belief. The Nets will likely be in New Jersey until 2012, when they will move to the new Barclays center in Brooklyn, making it instantly one of the most marketable teams in the league. You’re seeing this, because you saw it when you read the headline.

New Jersey: Wall: LeBron: Brooklyn.

Rough Day For Shaquille O’Neal

February 02, 2010 By: Katchop Category: NBA

Shaquille O’Neal of the Cleveland Cavaliers had a bad day on Monday. Still stung by the fact that he was left off the NBA All-Star team, today he was sued by a woman with whom he allegedly had a lengthy affair. The lawsuit came just hours after O’Neal was accused of sleeping with Gilbert Arenas’ fiancee.

A 30-year-old Lake Mary woman has filed suit against NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, accusing him of harassing and cyberstalking her after she broke off their five-year extra-marital affair.

The suit, filed in state circuit court in Orlando, alleges that after Vanessa Lopez dumped O’Neal last summer, he called her at all hours of the day and night, had his 6-foot-6 sister call and threaten her, and spied on her by having someone hack into her cell phone and get access to voice mail and text messages.

“O’Neal’s conduct was outrageous; his conduct was beyond all bounds of decency, atrocious and utterly intolerable in a civilized society,” according to the suit, filed Jan. 12.

Do The New York Knicks Even Have A Plan?

The New York Knicks are holding out hope that they can add LeBron James in the off-season, but their plan B might be a trade for Ricky Rubio.

Knicks GM Donnie Walsh has made no bones about it — his sole job is to clear cap space for the summer 2010 free agent sweepstakes.

The Knicks’ ultimate goal is to have enough money to sign two players from the group of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Joe Johnson, among others.

As it turns out, Walsh also might have someone else on his radar.

After missing out on Spanish star Ricky Rubio in June’s draft, the Knicks may be after him again, the New York Post reports. The 19-year-old point guard is viewed by many as the perfect fit for coach Mike D’Antoni’s infamous “seven seconds or less” offense.

Denver Nuggets’ Chris Anderson Hurt Again

Denver’s Chris Andersen has limped through too much of the first half to count to remain the same bench catalyst as he was last season. He is an energy guy trying to power up without the usual snap in his legs, and good luck with that. He’s one of the top reserve big men in the league who has been absorbing a steady stream of hits while slam dancing for rebounds and blocks. There was one stretch of getting banged on the right knee, right around the tendinitis hot spot, five games in a row.

What Andersen is not, he insists, is content. That so wouldn’t be him, but the popular Birdman re-signed in Denver in the summer with a five-year deal that could pay $26 million. Then came the the slow start to 2009-10. It wasn’t a big jump to wonder if he had relaxed, the way the Nuggets as a whole had done in a poor early response to playing with a target as a defending Western Conference finalist.

Marbury has long talked about playing overseas, mostly to sell his Starbury brand sneakers and apparel, which went online through an Amazon.com agreement recently.

Marbury has not confirmed the deal through his Twitter account or The Post. Marbury did not respond to messages yesterday.

One week ago, Marbury told The Post he returned from a holiday in Puerto Rico to celebrate his wife’s birthday and made no mention of the option to play in China.

The Chinese club is ranked 15th of 17 teams. The boss, Wang Xingjiang said on the team Web site: “The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games the rest of the season.”

Gilbert Arenas Goes Down

Arenas won’t know whether he must serve jail time until his March 26 sentencing and remains free until then. The government indicated it will not seek more than six months, although the judge can give Arenas anywhere from probation to the charge’s maximum term of five years. He will remain free until then.

In court, Arenas was barely audible, offering mostly terse answers such as “Yes, your honor” or “No, sir.” Those hands that have made so many shots and earned Arenas millions of dollars were shoved into the pockets of his gray, pinstriped suit. His demeanor stood in stark contrast to the gregarious, blog-writing, jersey-tossing persona that made the player known as “Agent Zero” a fan favorite. It also contrasted with the player who cracked jokes with reporters and on Twitter in the immediate aftermath of the Dec. 21 confrontation with a teammate that ended with guns being displayed.

Eddy Curry claims he slept for only two hours Sunday night because he couldn’t stop thinking about ghosts roaming the hotel.

LeBron James Loves Cavs New Look

The amount of equipment the Cavs take on a trip like this one — 11 days, five cities — is staggering. Their traveling party, which is in excess of 30 people when accounting for the players, coaches, support personnel and team broadcasters, has more combined gear than most touring rock bands.

Moving around 14 players, most of them very tall men, and bringing all the comforts of home — the home training room, video room and even a massage room — creates a demanding job for Cashman. It is easy to understand why when tallying it all up.

On this trip the Cavs have about 160 bags, about 100 for personal clothes. There’s about 60 more for uniforms, shoes and electronics. By the time their chartered Airbus jet hits the tarmac Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, though, Cashman knows that count will have grown.
