Chapman flashed a dominant fastball which sat at 96-97 mph and had good, late life. He topped out at 100 mph on a called third strike to Royals’ second baseman Chris Getz. Chapman struggled to command a 91-92 mph cut fastball that had average movement, and at times he showed a plus slider at 86-87 mph. He only threw one changeup, but had good arm speed on the pitch.

Overall, Chapman lived up to his billing as a future ace and made a strong opening bid to win a spot in the Reds rotation. He certainly impressed manager Dusty Baker, who praised Chapman’s combination of velocity and command.
