Jets After Tebow

March 21, 2012 By: Katchop Category: NFL

Peyton Manning as a Bronco means Tim Tebow could wind up as a NY Jet.

Tebow on the NY Jets?

Tebow on the NY Jets?

From The NY Times

Tebow appeals to the Jets because of his familiarity with the Wildcat, the formation popularized in Miami by their new offensive coordinator, Tony Sparano, and adored by Coach Rex Ryan. Sparano favors a run-oriented offense, and Tebow could emerge as a complementary piece, creating more opportunities for Sanchez to maximize one of his strengths, the play-action.

The most appealing destinations for Tebow presumably would be teams with unstable quarterback situations, giving him a chance to start — or at least compete for a job. Jacksonville and Miami qualify. The Jets do not, having recently guaranteed $20.5 million to Sanchez in a new five-year contract that established him as their franchise quarterback.

Manning Teasing Miami?

March 14, 2012 By: Katchop Category: NFL

The Miami Dolphins are waiting to see what Peyton Manning is thinking.

So what now?

Here’s what: Miami is shopping for a star quarterback without a No.1 receiver, and relying on an unlikely favorable decision by Manning to rescue the Dolphins from themselves.

That the entire perception and immediate future of the Dolphins hinges on Manning’s decision became ever more the truth Tuesday as Miami unexpectedly made a Chicago Bear of Marshall in exchange for a pair of third-round draft picks.

Miami trading away its best receiver as it tries to reel in its prized superstar quarterback is a little like giving away your bait as you go deep-sea fishing.

From The Washington Post

Peyton Manning spent nearly 6½ hours at the Arizona Cardinals’ headquarters and training facility on Sunday in meetings designed to lure the superstar to the desert.

The session followed a meeting of nearly six hours Manning had at the Broncos’ facility in Denver on Friday night. The two sessions were evidence that, for the time being at least, Arizona and Denver appear to be the top two contenders.

Manning Leaning Towards Denver?

From The Denver Post

The visit was productive,” a Broncos source said. “The team is hopeful and encouraged by the time spent” with Manning. Still, John Elway knows from all those millions he made in the car dealer business that once the customer leaves the showroom, the chances of closing the deal drop significantly.

Then again, there’s no sense for the Broncos to drop their daubers. The Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks are trying to get in the Manning sweepstakes, and he hasn’t visited them. As long as there’s a chance to acquire a player of Manning’s caliber, there is reason for optimism. Even though he missed the entire 2011 season because of neck surgeries, Manning has 399 career touchdown passes, 11 Pro Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl title ring.

Leafs Fire Wilson

March 02, 2012 By: Katchop Category: NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired head coach Ron Wilson.

Dion Phaneuf has been accused of soft play by Maple Leaf fans, but that may change under Randy Carlyle.

From Canada.com

Among other things, Burke said he could not bear to let Wilson face fans at the Air Canada Centre again after they booed him and chanted for him to be fired.

Burke also had very little confidence that Wilson could turn this season. Burke likened the team’s season to a 30-tonne truck being driven off a cliff, and said that even from talking to managers in other sports, that few had seen the kind of dropoff that the Leafs have seen recently, from sitting comfortably in the eighth spot to get them into the playoffs to falling five points out of playoff contention.

Burke went on to say that hiring a new coach now in Randy Carlyle saves them a month in the fall. He believes there is a slim chance that Carlyle could turn this team’s fortunes around and make the playoffs, but at the same time he doesn’t have to introduce a brand new coach on the first day of training camp.
